Trifix (Tri-fixation) and Stems
TRIFIXATION
Trifixation (trifix) is a concept originally conceived by Oscar Ichazo, but was not particularly fleshed out. While others have subsequently tried to better describe the 27 Trifxes, they’ve often been vague or inadequate. Furthermore, their powerful usage in inner work is often greatly overlooked. Below is a short explanation of trifix and stems, with more elaborate to come later on.
The Nine Enneagram Types emerge from the relationships of Body, Heart, and Mind, which are collectively referred to as the Centers of Intelligence. The Body, Heart, and Mind are the three fundamental centers through which human beings experience, express, and engage with consciousness, the three basic dimensions of human experience via the mediums of sensation, feeling, and cognitive awareness. Each Type represents a fixation on one of three equally important ways we try to navigate existential problems presented by having a body, having a heart, and having a mind.
The Centers of Intelligence represent three distinct selfhoods, each with its own priorities and mode of perceiving experience. The Body Center seeks groundedness, autonomy, and embodied presence. The Heart Center concerns itself with identity, value, and attunement. The Head Center seeks orientation, clarity, and understanding. These agendas often cooperate, but they can also conflict. One part of us may long for intimate emotional contact while another prioritizes safety or stability, for example.
It is not simply that each Center has its own agenda, but that each pursues its agenda through a particular fixation. The Body does not merely seek autonomy. It does so through the strategies of Eight, Nine, or One. The Heart does not simply seek identity. It does so through Two, Three, or Four. Likewise, the Mind seeks orientation through Five, Six, or Seven. The result is that every personality is negotiating three distinct psychological tasks, each constrained by the strengths and blind spots of the strategy available to that Center.
Even though we a core type, we still have two other Centers, which means that we actually have three basic types operating within us. This is called Trifixation or Trifix.
Trifix: A combination of three Enneagram types, one from each center, that describes how a person’s personality organizes around the characteristic concerns and strategies of the Body, Heart, and Mind.
Stem: A pairing of two Enneagram types, one from each of two different centers, that describes the psychological themes and strategies they share or bring together.
A few basic principles in understanding Trifix:
The nine stems are the building blocks; the trifix is the chemistry. A stem gives a recognizable psychological tension, but the third fix can alter its direction, intensity, and means of expression.
The absence of a strategy (triad) is often as important as its presence. For example, the lack of Assertive and Competency influences in 945 helps explain why an elaborate inner world may not translate into sustained external action. The lack of Rejection in 936 helps explain why adaptation can remain the primary means of establishing psychological ground.
Similar surface behavior can emerge from different structures. A 946 and a 147 may both be highly critical and dissatisfied, but the 946's scrutiny is bound up with attachment and uncertainty, whereas the 147's dissatisfaction is reinforced by three Frustration types and a push toward possibility.
Growth involves developing neglected capacities (triads) , not simply suppressing the dominant ones. The point isn't for a 947 to become conventional or for a 145 to abandon precision. It is for imagination to become embodied and for refinement to become expression.
Type 8 trifixes
825
Eight, Two, and Five combine forceful agency, a need to offer something valuable, and independently developed understanding. This configuration tends to express its value through leadership, guidance, knowledge, or intervention, with the risk of becoming controlling or overstepping others' boundaries in the conviction that it knows what they need.
826
Eight, Two, and Six organize themselves around protecting people through strength, responsibility, care, and vigilance. They can be fiercely loyal and effective in a crisis, but may become overresponsible for others' well-being, treating uncertainty as a problem that must be managed and protection as a duty they must personally fulfill.
827
Eight, Two, and Seven combine forceful intervention with relational generosity and an expansive, possibility-oriented outlook. This trifix wants to empower others and make life more exciting or fulfilling, but its strong outward momentum can become intrusive, overconfident, or insufficiently attentive to limits, consequences, and other people's autonomy.
835
Eight, Three, and Five combine autonomy, achievement, and independent understanding into a highly self-directed, competent, and pragmatic structure. Its strength lies in pursuing concrete results without relying heavily on external approval or guidance, while its liabilities include emotional distance, instrumental relationships, and a tendency to privilege effectiveness over vulnerability or idealism.
836
Eight, Three, and Six combine forceful agency and achievement with strong interpersonal awareness, loyalty, and sensitivity to threat. This can produce a charismatic, engaging, protective personality that wants both to determine its own course and influence its social environment, while remaining vulnerable to insecurity about trust, recognition, and how others respond.
837
Eight, Three, and Seven combine all three Assertive types, producing an unusually energetic, self-propelled orientation toward impact, achievement, and possibility. The configuration readily initiates action and shapes its circumstances, but its outward momentum can outpace reflection, emotional contact, and the ability to remain with experiences that do not offer immediate stimulation or progress.
845
Eight, Four, and Five combine forceful autonomy with a highly individualized inner world and a need for independently generated understanding. The central dynamic is impact without contamination: making one's vision consequential without allowing it to be diluted, defined, or controlled by outside influences; the corresponding risk is becoming so resistant to interference that one's perspective becomes isolated from correction or reality-testing.
846
Eight, Four, and Six combine forceful self-assertion with emotional intensity and scrutiny of what is trustworthy or threatening. The result is a highly reactive configuration concerned with defending what feels real against what seems false, coercive, or dangerous, with the risk of remaining organized around conflict, grievance, and the exposure of problems without enough access to hope or resolution.
847
Eight, Four, and Seven combine autonomy, personal identity, and possibility into a vivid, creative, provocative form of self-assertion. Identity is explored and intensified through experience, experimentation, and resistance to constraint, but the drive toward intensity and freedom can make sustained commitments, ordinary limitations, and the consequences of one's actions difficult to tolerate.
Type 9 trifixes
925
Nine, Two, and Five combine accommodation, care, and independent understanding, often producing a gentle, perceptive, and psychologically engaged person who offers others insight or support. Yet their attention can become so organized around understanding and helping others that their own desires, anger, and self-directed agency remain muted or inaccessible.
926
Nine, Two, and Six combine accommodation, care, and vigilance around connection and security. This configuration tends to preserve relationships through responsiveness, loyalty, and practical or emotional support, but can become overadapted to others' needs and anxieties, with difficulty distinguishing genuine personal desire from the demands of maintaining dependable connection.
927
Nine, Two, and Seven combine three Hopeful Outlook types, creating a strong tendency to move toward positivity, connection, pleasure, and possibility while softening or transforming negative experience. This can make the configuration generous, uplifting, and imaginative, but it can also foster avoidance of disappointment and limitation, alongside a self-image built around being especially loving, positive, or beneficial to others.
935
Nine, Three, and Five combine accommodation, achievement, and independent understanding into a reserved pursuit of competence and mastery. Rather than seeking value primarily through visibility or overt ambition, this configuration can develop substantial expertise through sustained observation and work, while using effectiveness and intellectual distance to avoid emotional exposure and the uncertainty of self-expression.
936
Nine, Three, and Six are all Attachment types, so the Body, Heart, and Mind each orient themselves through relationship with the surrounding world. This produces considerable adaptability, social intelligence, and sensitivity to others, but can make it difficult to establish an internally grounded sense of identity and direction independent of environmental feedback, expectations, and permission.
937
Nine, Three, and Seven combine social adaptability and an awareness of what others value with an assertive drive to create energy, excitement, and positive momentum. This configuration often wants to shape the atmosphere and lift the people around it, but can instrumentalize its charm and enthusiasm, struggle to leave things alone, and prioritize keeping life moving over staying with difficult or unresolved experience.
945
Nine, Four, and Five combine all three Withdrawn types, creating a powerful tendency to retreat from external demands into an internally developed world of personal meaning, abstraction, and imagination. Its inner life can become extraordinarily rich and distinctive, but the absence of strong outward assertion or obligation can leave that world difficult to communicate, embody, or bring into sustained participation with others.
946
Nine, Four, and Six combine withdrawal and accommodation with emotional sensitivity, longing, and scrutiny, producing a deeply inward and reactive configuration. It can perceive what is wrong with unusual clarity while struggling to act on what it wants, caught between the need to preserve connection, the desire to live authentically, and uncertainty about whether either is safely or realistically attainable.
947
Nine, Four, and Seven combine imagination, personal meaning, and possibility with a tendency to withdraw from demands and disturbances indirectly. This can yield unusual creativity and a mercurial, unconventional inner world, but it can also turn novelty, abstraction, and imaginative freedom into substitutes for sustained engagement, practical development, and the realization of possibilities in ordinary life.
Type 1 trifixes
125
One, Two, and Five combine moral purpose, care, and independent understanding into a mission to offer others something useful, corrective, or ethically clarifying. The configuration can provide incisive insight and thoughtful service, but may turn its desire to help into impersonal instruction or an inflated sense of authority about what others need to know or do.
126
One, Two, and Six combine all three Superego types, making responsibility, goodness, care, and reliability central organizing concerns. This can produce a conscientious and service-oriented person who takes obligations seriously, but also a strong tendency to moralize, police behavior, and mistake personal anxieties or preferences for objective standards that everyone should follow.
127
One, Two, and Seven combine a mission to improve life with care for others and an enthusiastic orientation toward positive possibilities. The configuration wants to be helpful, inspiring, and constructive, but can overextend itself in the service of making things better while using optimism, activity, and generosity to avoid disappointment, limitation, or the need for deeper self-examination.
135
One, Three, and Five combine all three Competency types, organizing the Body, Heart, and Mind around accuracy, effectiveness, and mastery. This produces a precise, disciplined, and analytically capable structure that seeks to improve reality through competence, but can become overidentified with performance and correctness while distancing itself from desire, emotional vulnerability, and less easily optimized aspects of life.
136
One, Three, and Six combine standards, achievement, and vigilance into a strongly effortful, problem-solving orientation. This configuration wants to do things correctly and effectively while ensuring that its efforts are reliable and responsible, but can become caught in an endless cycle of identifying problems, meeting expectations, and checking for failure without feeling that the work is ever truly finished.
137
One, Three, and Seven combine idealism and a drive for improvement with ambition, competence, and enthusiasm for possibilities. The configuration seeks to turn an inspirational vision into visible results, often through persuasion, leadership, or ambitious projects, but can become more invested in advancing and communicating its vision than in fully examining, digesting, or grounding it.
145
One, Four, and Five combine exacting standards, personal authenticity, and independent understanding into the refinement of an inwardly developed vision. The configuration can be unusually discerning, original, and devoted to precision, but may become so absorbed in perfecting an inner ideal that it remains remote from ordinary life and struggles to expose, express, or realize what it has developed.
146
One, Four, and Six combine the drive to correct what is wrong with sensitivity to inauthenticity and scrutiny of what may fail. This produces a highly problem-aware configuration that can identify ethical, emotional, and systemic flaws, but may struggle to trust solutions or imagine an outcome that finally satisfies its standards and resolves its concerns.
147
One, Four, and Seven combine three Frustration types, creating a persistent sensitivity to what is inadequate, inauthentic, crude, or less than it could be, alongside a strong imagination for alternatives. This can produce a distinctive blend of precision, creativity, playfulness, and irreverence, but also chronic irritation, contradictory demands for self-discipline and freedom, and difficulty sustaining imperfect work long enough to turn a vision into something real.
